___________________ Commander's Welcome ___________________

Welcome to the AMVETS, Department of Maryland web site. I hope you can find everything you need in these pages to make your visit a successful one.

Over the past few years, the Department has been very active throughout the community and within our National organization. We are growing and, with the help of our active members, we have made significant accomplishments: we have donated over $150,000 to the Johns Hopkins Children Miracle Network; we have provided thousands of volunteer hours to the VA Hospitals and Nursing Homes throughout Maryland and in West Virginia; we have continued to expand our membership base and have grown to nearly 3,600 strong; we have increased our volunteerism throughout the communities, providing an equivalent of over $154,000 in community service activities; and we are serving on key National committees in positions of leadership for the overall good of veterans throughout the country.

I am proud to be serving as this year's Commander for the Department of Maryland. I hope to be able to follow the lead of previous Commanders in making this organization one which continues to be respected throughout the Veterans community. If you are an active member, thank you for all of your hard work. It is paying great dividends for our veterans and our communities. If you are a member but have not yet gotten involved in your Post activities, I urge you to contact them and find out how you can best serve. If you are not yet a member, please click the link on the left and discover how you can join this proud organization. I'm sure you will not regret it!

Thank you for taking the time to visit our site and thank you for your help and dedication. Welcome to "Veterans Serving Veterans".

AMVETS Hosts Symposium for Young Vets In October 2006, AMVETS hosted an ambitious effort to help identify Veterans Benefits which are pertinent to today's military force. Bannered the "Symposium for the Needs of Young Veterans", the event took place in Chicago. Along with notables from the military services and the entertainment fields, the majority of the attendees were veterans familiar with the existing benefits and the needs of the veterans of the 21st Century. For more information, visit www.veteransnationalsymposium.org.

Department ConventionThe annual AMVETS Department of Maryland convention was held on June 2-3, 2006 at the Grand Venice Inn in Hagerstown, MD. Representatives from throughout the State joined to enhance the operation of the Department and to elect the leaders and officers for the 2006-2007 membership year. See the new list of Officers for contact information.

Color Guard Wins National Competition The Post 10 Color Guard, representing the Post and the Department of Maryland, participated in the National color guard competition at the 63rd National Convention on August 9th in Greensboro, NC and was declared the Best of the Best! Facing stiff competition from teams from Massachusetts, Georgia, and North Carolina, the Maryland team took the high honors due to their precision and perfectly executed routine. This marks the third time in four years that the Maryland Color Guard has achieved this high honor. Congratulations to ALL!!!

Post Revalidation Continues Nearly all Posts have been revalidated for the 2007-2008 membership year but a few still lag behind. Ask your Post leadership if they have revalidated for this year yet. It's not only important for your Post, but also for the Department and for National. Git 'er done!

Quality Post Awards Congratulations to the Department of Maryland and to each of the Posts which received the Quality Department and Post Awards at the National Convention. Those Posts were: Post 10 in Hagerstown (its second year in a row); and Post 115 in Lanham. Congratulations especially goes to Post 115 in Lanham for their 5th consecutive award, one of only three Posts across the country to have received the award since its inception.

Over $19K Donated to Johns Hopkins As one of the "pet" projects for the Department of Maryland, each Post was asked to contribute proceeds from at least one fund raising event for the Johns Hopkins Children Miracle Network. In addition, an auction was held at the Department Convention to help raise funds. Overall, we were very pleased to present over $15,000 to the cause. Over the past 5 years, the Department and Posts have donated over $150,000 to this very worthwhile charity.
